The Population Health Analytics Engineer role blends deep analytical expertise with a strong understanding of healthcare processes, claims data, and population health management strategies to drive measurable improvements in cost, quality, and patient outcomes. This role supports healthcare transformation by identifying actionable opportunities that reduce the cost of care while increasing quality and ensuring success in value-based care (VBC) contracts.
The AE will play a pivotal role in analyzing medical and pharmacy claims, risk adjustment methodologies, and provider performance to inform strategic decisions. The ideal candidate will have strong SQL skills, experience working with claims data, and an understanding of population health analytics, including risk stratification, utilization trends, and quality metric reporting.
Additional responsibilities include:
Developing insights that drive population health strategies and improve clinical, operational, and financial performance.
Supporting and training client teams to build internal analytics capabilities.
Evaluating and recommending analytics applications and methodologies to deploy at client sites.
Leading analytic projects from data ingestion to insights, ensuring quality and accuracy in reporting.
Translating data insights into actionable strategies that support VBC contract success, risk management, and care coordination.
Navigating discussions with client stakeholders to drive data-driven decision-making.
Supporting the Analytic Director (AD) in client deployments, knowledge transfer, and training.
Presenting analytic findings to a variety of stakeholders, including executive leadership, clinicians, and operational managers.
What you'll own in this role:
Perform complex analyses using claims data, clinical data, and social determinants of health (SDOH) to identify opportunities for care improvement and cost reduction.
Develop and maintain analytics models for population health management, risk stratification, and quality improvement.
Analyze performance in value-based care contracts, including shared savings agreements, capitation models, and bundled payment programs.
Support healthcare cost reduction strategies by identifying high-cost utilization patterns and opportunities for intervention.
Design and implement data models and dashboards to track key performance indicators (KPIs) for population health initiatives.
Work with client data teams to validate data quality, establish best practices, and optimize data pipelines.
Collaborate with clinical, operational, and financial leaders to ensure analytics align with strategic priorities.
Maintain expertise in healthcare regulatory requirements, including CMS quality programs, HEDIS measures, and risk adjustment methodologies.
What you bring to this role:
Expert-level SQL skills for querying large datasets, including claims and encounter data.
Deep understanding of healthcare claims data, including medical, pharmacy, and eligibility files.
Experience with value-based care analytics, including risk adjustment, quality reporting, and provider performance measurement.
Knowledge of population health management strategies, including predictive analytics, risk stratification, and intervention tracking.
Experience with ETL processes and data integration in healthcare environments.
Strong ability to communicate insights to clinical and operational stakeholders.
Proficiency in data visualization tools (Tableau, Power BI, QlikView) to build user-friendly reports and dashboards.
Self-motivated and able to work independently, while also collaborating with cross-functional teams.
Desired Skills
Experience with claims-based analytics platforms and healthcare data models (e.g., CCW, HCC, Episode Groupers).
Familiarity with Medicare Advantage, Medicaid, and Commercial VBC programs.
Statistical modeling experience using Python, R, or SAS.
Working knowledge of CMS quality programs (e.g., MIPS, HEDIS, STARS).
Understanding of Lean, Six Sigma, or other process improvement methodologies.
Experience with SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) or other data engineering tools.
Knowledge of AI and machine learning applications in healthcare analytics.
Preferred Education & Relevant Experience
BS/BA in data science, information technology, healthcare administration, business analytics, or a related field.
5+ years of experience in healthcare analytics, with a focus on claims data, VBC contract performance, and population health.
